purging hot tub ( air lock )

purging your hot tub ( refilling your tub , flo error , pump runs, but no water circulation, )

When refilling your hot tub after a winterization , or drain and clean, you may experience an airlock in your hot tub system. its just the law of physics at work here so there is no major component fault. tell-tale signs is the hot tub circ pump or pump (jets ) number one on your hot tub is running but there is no water flo or movement in the tub and the top side error codes Flo, three dots, dry may appear depending on your make and model of hot tub. The best way to take care of the issue is to read the manual of your hot tub for specific purging procedure as some are partial automatic and others tell u where to find the purge srews to let the air out. note: it is always best to fill the hot tub thru the hot tub canister to help reduce air locks.
caution: hot tubs carry high voltage and guide below works with general systems so if your not sure best to hire a hot tub tech.
(so no luck with the hot tub manual )
guide ( 1st try )
1. turn off the power to your hot tub
2. take the filter out of the hot tub and place your garden hose in the canister right to the bottom inlet and turn on the water high. this may force the water to push out the air in the system. ( should see bubbles coming out of jets.
3. take hose out and start the hot tub system up
2nd try
1. turn off the power to your hot tub
2. identify your circulation hot tub pump ( this pump feeds the hot tub heater that is a stainless steel tube )
3. loosen the pump union that is attached to the plastic pipe (this connects the pump to the lines) .or loosen the purge valve screw. either way, loosen it just enough for air to rush out ( hissing noise ),. note :the purge nut is on the wet end of the pump faceplate.
4.when hissing stops and water begins to drip out , tighten the nut
5. start up system
you should be on your way to a good night of hot tubing ,but if your still having trouble, give us a call

How to know if a hot tub heater is not working

How to know if a hot tub heater is not working.  587-333-2386

Their are many reasons why a hot tub may stop heating, the following points define the most common not heating reasons. Sometimes 2 or more of the following problems have to be resolved to resume heating in a hot tub.

Dirty filters ( #1 )

Very common finding in visits with hot tub flow and heating issues.

dirty hot tub filters, try replacing the filter for a new one and see if this resolves your problem, if the filter is more than 1 years old it will probably need changing anyway.

we have all your filters . give us a call   587-333-2386

Pressure switch

Most hot tub heaters (apart from Balboa M7 Heaters) have a pressure switch which proves water is flowing inside the hot tubs plumbing, when the circulation pump of the spa starts up the pressure from the pump will close a circuit which enables the power for the hot tub heater.

This can get blocked or may need replacing, the control panel will usually define this with an error code: FL1 FLO or 3 lines or dots (— or . . .) .

(note: never adjust a pressure switch, they are factory set and designed to fail, if the switch stays open and the circulation pump fails you will get an expensive repair bill)

we have pressure switches for all makes and brands. give us a call for parts and installation.  587-333-2386

Faulty Circulation Pump

Faulty hot tub pumps are common, the reduced flow of a dirty filter can easily burn out a hot tub pump, If the pump is getting power and roatating it may just be an air lock (try lossening a pump union to resolve or  purge nipple on face plate). should hear a hissing noise followed by water trickle.

If the pump is buzzing the capacitor,  burnt out coil and rusty/ seized bearings may need be the reason.

Heater Tripping Hot Tub

g.f.i tripping outright

Reasons for tripping hot tub heaters:

Hot tub filled with water incorrectly – if the water is filled through the middle and not through the filter housing to push air out, it will burn out.

Incorrect chemicals – Swimming pool chemicals and highly aciddic water will burn out the seals on a hot tub heater. (swimming pool/ cheap chemicals will also burn out pump seals and anything else made of rubber.)

at western we provide free chemical advice and only quality chemicals made for hot tubs. give us a call with your hot tub chemistry concerns.

Incorrectly fitted hot tub  heater elements – Get a hot tub technician to replace your heater instead of the local neighbourhood handyman

Blockages – plastic parts and foreign parts in the hot tub will burn out heater elements.

Burn’t Out Circuit Boards or PCB’S

Sometimes if a fault has been happening for a while it will put a strain onto the hot tub Circuit Board (PCB) this could mean that a relay has burnt out or stuck. at this stage only a technician should test and service the hot tub.
